Kadaj is the youngest brother of Sephiroth, and only known relative to the vampire General after their other two brothers Loz and Yazoo were killed in the war. Despite being relatively young in vampire age (the equivalent of a 16-year-old human), Kadaj is a high-ranking soldier in Adventia's military forces, though not as high a rank as Loz and Yazoo. Kadaj is known for being left-handed like his brothers, and mostly known for his swift combat and his ability to wield his trusted double-edged sword, Souba, with just one hand. He's also known for extreme mood swings from time to time, but has since learned to keep them in check.
After the Firefields War was over and Kairi was elected as the High Sovereign Overseer of Adventia, during the changing of the overrule process between the old and new, stealthily some of the vampire clan members denounced their birth rights under Adventia rule to join Kain's alternative vampire clan. These were later referred to by name from other Creatures Dark in contemporary history as, the Remnants.
Kadaj was one of them.
Sephiroth caught up to him on the last minute, begging him not to leave the family, because being a Vampire General sworn to the Overseer's service, his was a lifetime of servitude, forever bound to Princess Kairi. This meant that he was forever forbidden to return to his vampire family's fold, he cannot hold honorary grants or titles from humans and Creatures Dark, he cannot have proper ownership of lands and assets, and he can never marry or sire children [to be changed]. Hence why he would prefer to have Kadaj back into the familial fold - Kadaj being the remaining vampire son of the family, everything that the family owns would go to him.
But Kadaj decided that he had had enough. He had seen enough horrors of humanity AND Creatures Dark from his short but extremely memorable stint in the Firefields War (it crossed seven years, and ended when the war was won by Adventia's forces, albeit with a very high cost - the lives of the very King and Queen Overseer they originally served, the last of the royal vampire lineage whose ancestry traced back to the original ones agreeing to create the Truce of Balance when the world was reborn anew aeons ago).
And Kadaj wanted nothing more but getting out of it all. He was sick to death; his parents' death, his brothers' demise on the battlefield, his friends dying in his arms as he saw the last light of life going out of them, and the untimely death of the one girl he loved the most, a human medic who worked in the battlefields, healing everyone, allies and enemies alike.
